In a weird coincidence, the latest episode of "Antiques Road Show" in the US had what the owned had always called a "princess vase" that was made of gold with many artfully placed holes and studded with diamonds. It was, the appraiser said, a "zarf" and was a holder for coffeecups. The name zarf was an Arabic word, but I forget what it was originally supposed to mean (unless it was always supposed to mean "coffee cup holder"). Until that show, I had never heard the word "zarf", and now I have heard it twice in a week -- and then, more times in this thread. I will remember the word.
