Great achievements, bwt and zolorbowl! I haven't been brave enough to go back and see how much I typically beat (or don't) my previous scores, but I have a lot of variability, and I'm pretty sure I've done 100 pts better or worse several times.

As for board retirement, I can give some data (attached) that I think is pretty conclusive. 5x5 boards are definitely retired after 600 points (or ~50 games), but I think the consensus is that's done about once per day. So if you're lucky, you could catch a game right after one of the heavy hitters played. Not so common, though!

This is a histogram of # boards vs. high score on the board before play. I play every game, and of the 3238 saved games in the data, a grand total of 20 had high scores > 600. So you have about a 1 in 160 chance of hitting one of those games while clicking through. I'd expect it to be variable, depending on whether someone has been through mere hours before you, cleaning up all the big boards.

And here's the same graph for # times played.

51: 8

You're right. It's pretty convincing that a > 600 point score is a criterion for retiring a board (in addition to the 50 game limit). I've idly wondered before if there were other criteria for when a board has been "used up", like if all the words had been found. I can't think of an easy way to test that though.

Boards have a 75-word minimum (it's easy to generate boards with fewer than that, so I'm pretty sure about this restriction). I think it must be nearly impossible on 5x5 to find all the words, and I've rarely seen it even close. I know little about 4x4, but I understand it's at least possible there.

I just went and checked, and there are only two times (of 3300) that it's (almost) happened, both because of cheaters.
88/88 words
452/453 words

In both cases the cheater actually missed a word, because their dictionary didn't quite match the site's. Anyway, aside from cheaters, the closest any board has gotten is
120/127 (94%). Megaword was responsible for 105 of those.

The ones everyone missed were:
EISEL
ISOETES
NOWAYS
OBTEST
OBTUSE
WAURST
XYST

Yeah, I was thinking about cheaters. Once I ran across a board that I considered playing (hoping to get a new best word), but on counting things up, every word had been played. That was the only time I've seen that, but then again, I normally don't count that stuff up.

Then again, there are some pretty damn good players here, so I don't find it inconceivable that, over 50 plays, all the words could be found.

I suspect it's theoretically possible, with exactly the right board. I'm not sure it ever happens in practice. The problem is, almost every board has some very obscure low-probability words, ones that even good players just won't notice even if they might recognize them.

Anyway, back to the original topic of beating (or not beating) yourself: I steeled myself for the unpleasant truth, and at least so far I'm beating previous scores by about 18 points on average. But I was completely correct that I have both +100 and -100 games. Here's a plot with 1st game performance on the x-axis, 2nd game on the y.

Everything above the orange line is a better performance. As you can see, my scores aren't that repeatable. Standard deviation is 55 points from the best fit line.

As an aside, I do all this number crunching in python, mostly in jupyter notebooks. Highly recommended. Here's what I did to make the graph below:

The hardest part is hidden before the first steps, when I grepped through 3200 html saved-games to extract the relevant statistics.

+32 on words, +210 on points! No, I have never come anywhere near that. I have passed previous high scores by that much (my best was about 400 points on a board someone wasn't playing for longest word or highest average), but not my own.

Just came across an 861 of mine and topped it with a 987...that felt pretty great!
