The doubling of a word emphasizes it, as we might say something was so SO delicious. So... Lalatan reminds me of Lālātāng which could be thought of as hot HOT soup. (Not an expert, anyone should feel free to offer any correction if I'm wrong here.)

But in English it means 'excellent Boggle player'.
Now that you bring it up, that's probably what's going to come to mind from now one whenever I see the name. (I'm natively bilingual in English and Mandarin, though actually more fluent in Spanish than Mandarin these days.)

First it was Mountain Horse that was setting records on WordTwist. It has been more than counting with its hoof for quite some time now. (I know, the horse picks up visual cues from the human. Still has to notice it though.)
Now I see Maxthebordercollie setting the occasional record. Good grief, I knew those dogs are smart but playing WordTwist??!

Or are these yet more instances of the rampant anthropomorphism prevalent in our culture?

Well, spike is named after a cat, so...
I guess aliases are a bit like passwords, pets' names seem to be pretty popular. I have to confess to using my hamster's name in an MMORG (Discworld MUD). And when I first adopted the name Crazykate for myself, it was originally supposed to be "crazycat", but it turned out that crazycat 1 through 14 had already been taken, yet when I changed it to include my name instead, I was the first crazykate on that particular site. It's now my username on various sites and forums, and about 90% of the time it's still available.

Of course you're right about the popularity of pet names. When I saw Max I thought I'd have a little fun with it on this thread. I guess mine is a pet name but of a different kind. (It's what my granddaughter called me when she was a toddler.)

Pretty crazy that there were 14 crazycats already.
