This is a thread where folks can post words they believe are "valid" but aren't recognized by our dictionary here at Boggled.org. We'll do our best to keep the dictionary as complete and up-to-date as possible.

Words to date:

- TARN
- PRAT

One member mentioned "sine," but I've played "sine" many times and it's been tallied. Is it possible that "sine" is recognized in some puzzles, but not in others? "Git" is another; "tarn" I already mentioned; is "med" (for medication) ok? What about "mus" and "nus" -- as in the plural of the Greek letters. Other plural Greek letters, like "taus" and "etas", are accepted. One puzzle today would not accept "pend" -- could this be an instance where it's only accepted in some puzzles? Also, "fug" is a word that is not recognized. I have encountered others, but can't remember right now.

"Siesta" is a valid word but "siestas"--the plural--is not accepted.

"Max" should be added to the list of valid words. I'm always looking for more ways to incorporate an "x" into the game field.

Just an update - we'll be implementing a system-wide database upgrade on August 1st. This will be based on the TWL and SOWPODS dictionaries.

The new dictionary will incorporate most, if not all, of the words posted above as missing in the current dictionary (i.e. ROUST, PRAT, TARN) and will also eliminate several hundred words currently allowed which are not officially recognized by most dictionaries.

More information is available at:
http://www.boggled.org/forum/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=36

Thanks again for all the helpful feedback!

Just a quick question: How will the new system affect the high scores list? Will we loss everything completely?

admin
07-26-2007, 01:41 PM
I don't have any plans to wipe the high scores list at this point. The new boards should play very much the same as the old ones, so scores should be within the same general ranges, meaning previous players won't have an undue advantage over players who start playing after the switch-over.

In the near future we'll also be implementing monthly high score challenges, so this will allow newer players to compete on a more level playing field with those who have played 1000+ games.

On the new system it doesn't pick up the word "zen." I've tried to play it in a few different games. I am liking the new system though . . . my scores seem to be improving doing to the new range of words.

Hi elgallo -

Unfortunately, "ZEN" is one of those words that was in our old dictionary but is not considered a valid word in the official Scrabble SOWPODS dictionary we've now switched over to. (I'm assuming because it's considered a proper noun? But not entirely sure. It may be one of those terms that will eventually be added in their next update.)

There are very helpful lists of all valid 3, 4 and 5 letter words in SOWPODS at this link:

http://www.isc.ro/en/commands/lists.html

Dear admin,

While I am really enjoying this new system and am glad that you switched to the SOWPODS list, I think it would be nice if we had a way to submit new words for submission. Maybe there's a way you can set up a simple program that lets us submit words directly to you, or maybe we could submit words in a forum like this. It would be nice if we could constantly keep updating the dictionary and be aware of what words are added.

Thank you.

ZEN is not in the Scrabble word lists because all major dictionaries list it only with a capital Z.

elgallo
07-29-2007, 03:00 AM
Furthermore, it doesn't accept "jazz" or "jazzy." I can see why it might not accept "Zen" because it is commonly spelled with a capital Z, but jazz is a perfectly legit word. I've seen some other words that I think are missing but they escape me at the moment.

admin
07-29-2007, 08:21 AM
Hi elgallo -

Both words are technically in our dictionary, but they would never come into use here because there is never more than one Z on any playing board.

elgallo

Huh! I could have sworn I saw the word jazz. I thought I checked to make sure. Maybe it was just my imagination. Oh well...

how come there is never more than one Z on the board? i do think the boards tend to be a little too much alike.... maybe you could relax some of generation rules you've programed in? certain hard letters could show up more often, and in different combinations than we currently see?

I'm pretty sure that's only a proper noun/adjective ...
At any rate, it's not in the SOWPODS dictionary and I don't think the webmaster is planning to change the dictionary any time soon.
That said, that's a word I still go for sometimes ;)

So ... a long time ago I was guessing words on a board and got "quassin" to work. I looked it up on lexic.us, which said it was an extract of quassia and had formerly been called "quassite". I've since been able to play quassia once or twice, but had never gotten a board with quassite until today. So I was super-excited until I tried it and found out it's not in SOWPODS. I was kind of annoyed, but now I think it's funny.
So, anyhow, thought I'd share my story.

Thanks for sharing, Nafets!:D My question is about "oaty". If "oatier" is allowed, and it is allowed, then why not "oaty"? I know...sowpods. Amusing little words, both. (see word game thread (http://www.wordtwist.org/forum/showthread.php?t=74&page=17) beginning post 163)

Just kidding. But seriously, how come "antisex" works, but "prosex" doesn't? And how come "unsex" works, but "resex" doesn't? If "unsex" is a word, then "sex" is a verb, so "resex" should also be a verb. I know...logic doesn't apply...

OK thule is really capitalized so scratch that. Stevia I've been caught by too. Another one: burro and burros/burroes. People in the Western US really do call small wild donkeys burros. It's not just a Spanish word.

Hey, officeann - butting in here.

The knitting term is "purl" (and the game accepts it). :)

"Perl" is a common enough term, though. It's a programming language. Unfortunately, it has to be capitalized.
