While I like the new game play of Version 2.0, I find that accidently pressing <enter> a couple of times in a row shuts down my current game. Quite frustrating. I'm going back to the old version until this bug is fixed.

If I make a mistake and hit backspace in version 2.1 the game shuts down and goes back to the start. I lose every word that I had found and have to start over. I started over 4 times on the same game just because I hit backspace to correct a mistake. At least it only credited me with one game instead of 4 with measly word count!

Hi debbie -

Can you let me know what browser and operating system you're using? Thanks!

Hi Stephen,

Internet Explorer and Windows XP professional and on my older laptop Windows 2000 professional (and Internet Explorer). It does it on both systems. I am playing the original for the time being because I am worried about my scores being affected, although it didn't count the aborted games. I could really love the new version except for the backspace problem. I do make some mistakes while typing fast and as soon as I try to correct one it goes back to the beginning and I have to click start again....weird! Thanks for everything you do...we love this site.

Thanks Debbie!

For everyone who's experienced the backspace problem... I've just now added some code that *may* solve this problem. Please let me know if this issue disappears for you today while playing the new board, or if it remains.

Part of the problem is that neither I nor my fellow developer can replicate this problem on any of our computers (we've tried six so far at least) so its a little tricky trying to figure out what exactly is causing it.

Thanks for your help!

It did fine so far on 4 x 4 but on 5 x 5 it randomly restarted the game when I hit backspace. It didn't do it every time so it happened several times in one game. I had about 10 words and hit backspace to correct a word and it started over. Then about 10 words again and it started over. The third time I restarted the game I hit backspace several times during the game and it didn't start over...???

I am having the same problem as debbiedoo when backspacing. I lose all the words I had and the game goes back to the start page. I click the new version and restart it and sometimes it backspaces to correct an error and other times it goes back to start. I had to play the same game 3 times to finish it and I lost all the words I had at first and got a horrible score! I thought it was fixed today because it seemed better but it started again. I am going to stick to the original for the time being.

I am having the backspace problem as well and am running basically the same operating system as biloxidebbie. I hit backspace and lose my entire game and have to start the game over. Also, it kind of looks like I am looking through someone else's glasses when I look at the board. My eyes get tired quickly if I play the new version. I like the way that you changed the words found back to the colors that we are used to. Thanks the ding at the end too...love that feature.

We're working on the backspace problem as we speak.

AdamsMuse - could you possibly send a screenshot of what you're seeing on the new board? We've had a few complaints about the new board causing eye strain, but on my systems the board really isn't all that different from the old one. I'm wondering if different computers are rendering it fuzzy for some reason. If you could possibly email me (admin -at- boggled.org) with a screenshot of the new board it would be a huge help!

To take a screenshot on a PC, just hold down ALT and PRT-SC (print screen) at the same time, then open an email or word document and CTRL-V (or Paste) into it - that should paste the screenshot directly.

Thanks for everyone's help! We're working hard to make the new board accessible and fun for everyone.

Just to confirm - this is a side-by-side comparison of the old and new boards, at least, this is how I see them on my various test-systems here. If you're seeing anything different from the below, please let me know. Otherwise, if you DO see the same as what's below, and you still find it causes eye-strain for you, please let me know what about the new board layout you think is causing the problem. Thanks!

Love the new version, looks great, easy to use. The backspace problem is an issue for me as well though. The first couple of times I tried today were fine, then after that it happens every time I hit backspace. Which is not a huge issue I guess, but annoying because I use it often.

I have Windows 2000 and IE 6. I'm wondering if it might happen when memory on my machine gets lower, it seems that way.

So back to the original for me, which is just fine because I can backspace all I want. :)

I'm still wondering why the font used in the letters for 2.1 is different than in 1.0.
It seems less clear and makes my eyes blurry after repeated games.

Hello -

We made a slight change to the code 2 days ago, and I've not seen any complaints about the backspace problem since then - could anyone who's had this problem before let me know if it has in fact disappeared? Thanks!

- Stephen

I hit backspace twice in a 5 x 5 game today because I saw a mistake and it sent me back to the start page. I thought the glitch had stopped but it happened again. I hit the backspace twice rapidly in another board and it didn't do it. Also, the ding happens way after the time is up. The board looks blurry and after one or two games I have to revert to the old board because my eyes are hurting. Letters in the entry box are blurry too.

Comparing the two boards, the old version does have the sharper looking letters

I have to agree... I find the original letters easier to read.

It's not very obvious on the side by side comparison by admin but it is very obvious when playing the actual board.

I noticed that my eyes feel like I have been looking through a magnifying glass or something after I have played a few boards.

Hi folks -

We've released a new version of the Flash board this morning. Two changes:

1. There was a bug that allowed a word or two to be entered after the timer had rung. This has now been fixed.

2. We altered the anti-aliasing on the font so that the edges should be less "blurry" - please let me know if this helps, especially those of you who felt the previous board was giving them eye-strain.

Thanks!

The board looks better and not as blurry but the backspace problem is still there. I just played a 4 x 4 board and when I backspaced it kicked me back to the start of the game and I had to restart it. I saw two letters I had entered wrong and backspaced twice to get them out and that's when it kicked me back to the start. I thought it happened only when I backspaced twice but it also happens when you only backspace one time as well. I just tried it to verify. Thanks for fixing the "dinger"...works better now.

Hi Joesgirl -

Thanks! Could you (and anyone else experiencing the backspace problem on the Flash board) please go to this url and perform the two quick tests that are there? This will give us a lot more information on what might be the source of this problem. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Stephen,

I tried to play both 4 x 4 and 5 x 5 on my desktop and laptop and the results are as follows:

Both computers indicated that both tests on your test page were fine. The backspace button didn't take me back to your test page on either test on either computer.

The info on the test page reads as follows:
MOZILLA/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; NET CLR 1.1.4322. Flash version 10.0.12.36. This is weird because I am running windows XP and IE 6. I don't know why it says Windows NT?? When I just played a 4 x 4 and a 5 x 5 on this computer it kicked me out of both type of grids when I hit backspace, even though the test page didn't kick me out.

Now the laptop:

MOZILLA/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; WINDOWS NT 5.0)

Flash player version 10.0.12.36

When I did the test on the test page neither test kicked me back to your first page. When I played the 4 x 4 it didn't kick me back but when I played the 5 x 5 it kicked me back to the start as soon as I hit back space. It didn't matter if I hit backspace one time or several...it went right back to start. I am running Windows 2000. It mentions windows nt on your test page as shown above.

The letters on both computers in the word typing box are quite blurry although the grid looks somewhat clearer. The dinger dings correctly now...thanks for all your hard work. I hope this helps.

I have virtually the same problem and information as debbiedoo. My desktop says the exact same thing as the information she listed and the same thing happened to me too. It kicked me out on both 4 x 4 and 5 x 5 games although both test pages indicated all was well. Neither test sent me back when I hit backspace. Still kind of hard on the eyes on the new boards.

Finally, some good news (I hope). I was finally able to replicate this backspace issue on one of my own machines. It seems to occur mainly in Interner Explorer 6.0, mainly on slower internet connections, and generally only towards the beginning of a game. That suggests to me that the issue is that the game is beginning before all necessary code has been downloaded to the browser.

Anyway, long story short, I've recoded the Flash game board tonight so that it will only load once all necessary libraries are in place. Initial testing in IE6 has gotten rid of the backspace issue, at least on my machine.

If you could please try this out once more and let me know if there is any improvement, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks as always for your help and patience!

- Stephen

The backspace seems to be working now but the board is still hard on the eyes. I can't play more than one game without getting eye strain or dizzy...the words are fuzzy even when you enter them in the box. The grid is weird in some way but I can't pinpoint it. Just seems like I am seeing it through a magnifying glass or something like that. It isn't exactly blurry...sort of "stretched out". The words we type in are actually blurry...like a ghost around the letter. Hope this helps.

I have a hard time playing on the new board too. I would have to stop playing altogether if the old board wasn't there anymore. I play for at least an hour a day but can't play more than a couple of games on the new board because it hurts my eyes. The backspace problem is fixed but the dinger doesn't sound for awhile after the game is over...I keep typing!

I have a hard time playing with the boards for too long for the same reason

I would also like to point out, I sometimes get my enter key not registering strokes but that might just be my keyboard
