View Full Version : how fast can you type?

I was looking at this guy Crovax, who holds something like 1600 records in points and words. His maximum words in a 4x4 was about 160. I realize that 80 wpm isn't unreasonable when you're copying something, but how do you find 80 wpm in a boggle board and type them? That's assuming you never type a word that's not on the list. How is this humanly possible?

is this webpage moderated? And, why would anyone bother to cheat on a free boggle webpage?

Hi gsliwoski -
Believe it or not, people can and do actually get these scores legitimately. A while back one of our players actually posted a video to prove it:

Thanks for playing!

The video is Crovax and you can see those words popping up there so fast. I guess he just has that eye hand coordination! I watched the video a while back...amazing!

Watching that video I realised, about 2 minutes in, my jaw had dropped and I forgot to close it. I love this game :)

It takes some practice, but pretty quickly you'll recognize chains and be able to type out something like 8-12 words without even thinking about them. While typing these strings out (e.g. sore, eros, ores, roes, rose) I'll be busy looking for other strings. I also make sure to keep typing even if I can't see any words. Often times guessing works just as well. I haven't done the 4x4 that much, but in my experience there are a LOT of three letter words that end in s. Practice makes perfect. Good luck.

I LOVE doing wordtwist and admittedly am not a super fast typist
BUT when I see a score 350+ forget 400+ and an outrageous number
of words. I almost don't want to be bothered but I will -
I almost REALLY dislike doing any board with that high a score because I know I will be put down into LOW
It makes the average score way too high, specially when there have not been many plays.
Sorry but to me certain people have a way of submitting words
and get a real thrill being top dog. I've seen it in other places
I will always play the game cause I like it sooo much
THANKS FOR A GREAT SITE!!!

If you look at the high scoring games, even at 400 points, there aren't that many words necessary. A lot of boards have words about 40 to 70. That is between 13 & 23 wpm typing. Not fast at all!

My son types 132 words a minute, though he doesn't play this game. (officially documented through testing at school) People who are big IMers learn to really bust through words. It's not as rare as all that. My problem is often that I don't type as fast as I see them. Maybe Crovax is blessed with a quick mind and fingers too!

Scroll backwards through this forum and look for the link to Crovax's video. You are right..he is blessed with the eye hand coordination all right. When you see that video you will freak out.
I can't type but about 50 words per minute accurately and I got over 300 points for the first time the other day--wouldn't you know I had forgotten to log in so didn't get credit in my scores! I didn't have but about 35 words but they were all high point words.
I agree with bowl231 about the graph. I get some high scoring words and am in the hall of fame every month but, when I play I am frequently in the bottom on that graph because I can't type as many words. I feel kind of bad when I see myself in the bottom even though I get some 16 point words and 10 letter words...

what about those of us who are non-typists? the game definitely gives a fast typist a big advantage, especially on a board with many words. it seems like the fewer words on a given board, the higher my average score. on a click and drag game i can do over 100 words in a game but never seem to be able break 80 in this kind of set-up making it even more exceptionally tough to beat a good typist. the saving grace is that nomatter how fast you type you still have to recognize and find the words as is evidenced by the number of boards that have been played 50-100 or more times with nobody finding the best word(s)

Back in 4th-6th grade, we were required to do Mavis Beacon typing in school. I averaged around 55 words per minute, and know i am not the absolute fastest typer (especially after watching that video). I joined this site a few days ago and already have 5 records or so, none of which are for most words or highest score.
Congrats to those who can type faster than the speed of light because that is an incredible skill

I regularly type between 70 and 80 wpm with ~99% accuracy on random text (typing paragraphs of text, etc).
I have no idea of a real metric, but when I can hit common 4-square blocks that number probably skyrockets -- something like a block with s,e,a,t -- I'll usually bang through that entire block in under 2 seconds, it's all down to muscle memory at that point, I have a common method -- everything that starts with: s, e, a, t in that order, non-stop.
I don't even register the words as they pop anymore, only the keystrokes matter.
There are a number of letter combinations that now trigger that sort of memorized typing.

I know look to see how many times a grid has been
used. If it is small and the number of words and score
is high from the "super" and "guest" (the average is not shown
but would also be outrageous) - I click the home,
forum button or IE back arrow to get rid of that grid.
I wish there was a button to click to cancel an offered grid.
No sense is wasting my energy against these "people"
I love this site and game a lot thanks for a great game

Hi Bowl,
I sometimes look at the stats also to decide if I want to play the game. Other times I just play whatever game comes up.
But you can just click on the "new game" option to get a new game - it's shown on the top right of the screen.
I actually like the games that haven't been played much. I know I probably won't make the high scores but I usually do get "green" words and find it challenging to compare my scores with the averages, etc...

I have to say there needs to be a multiplayer boggle. There are also several times I have seen over 85 words having been typed in the 2 minute period... which seems suspicious. I knew many people who used to cheat... and it seems like it happens hear again. good site tho.

Look back in the forum and watch the video by Crovax. If you can't find it, look on youtube. You can see him actually playing and getting that many words...he's awesome! I guess some people just have it...I know I don't...can't type fast enough and see the words at the same time. I love it though..

I have seen the Crovax video and it was impressive. I can only imagine his records. I can see that he is getting his scores honestly when looking at that video. Wish I could type like that!

I have a typing speed of a maximum of 56wpm (I don't touch-type either). However, I have scored over 500 several times and have gotten more than 100 words on a few occasions too. It isn't that hard when you know the dictionary and various patterns well. For instance, if you see the letters S, N, E, and A, you can type out SENA, SANE, SAN, NAS, SEA, SAE, EAS, EAN, EANS, NAE, ANE, ANES, SEAN, SEN, ENS in no more than a few seconds. You would be surprised how much you get for those words alone. Also, if you memorize your words using hooks and anagrams you can type faster as your fingers aren't moving around so much. There is also a lot less chance of inaccuracy.
Over on the Facebook app, Prolific, where I play most of my Boggle, there are several players who can type over 150wpm. However, if you know the dictionary well they can be beaten (though I couldn't beat most of them on the really big boards).

Personally, I'm able to type about 120-130 WPM without copying something, and I never look at the keyboard while typing.
While playing Boggle I can find the simple three letter words and can type many extremely quickly, maybe ~200 WPM, while still scouring the board for larger, high-point words.

This game is helping my typing, though I'm still not super-fast and I tend to make mistakes. I'm thrilled when I get 60 words or over 300 points.
So much of it is just practice, as people said, and learning to recognize certain patterns.

I recently joined wordtwist and am a horrible typist (45wpm at best) so I was floored when I saw the scores/#words found in my initial games--I knew the words but I couldn't type them fast enough....then I realized you can drag and click and my game play did a complete 360 :D
I wish I were a great typist because I feel that would be the fastest way to get the words in--especially if you know the words. Drag & click tends to foil me at times because I miss a word or two in the chain by accidental selecting the the same word twice and not realizing it--I wouldn't see that happening with typing.
Oh well, this site is awesome! I'm glad to spend my free time here :)

Welcome to our addiction, theartsyone! It's a great game (other great games, too; check at the bottom of your game screen) and an excellent site. I'll never be as good as some people here, but I just love the game and the personal challenge. When I break a record, especially after a board has been played a lot, man, that just makes my day... But it tends to make me keep playing even longer!
If you want to see great game play in action and get a feel for what some people can achieve (not likely me; my highest is 399 points), do a search for the Crovax video on this site. It's really great to see someone who knows exactly what to do and how to do it!
Enjoy! But be careful.... There is no known 12-step program to combat this addiction! 8-)
No doubt, a good skill in typing is an asset leading to outwit your opponent. This game requires a combination of knowledge and skill, one can not stand alone without the other.
Humbly speaking, I am new to this site however, I can vividly remember that as early as 9 yrs. I have this kind of enthusiasm and attachment to word games, what I mean to say was that I really enjoy and am always engross to be playing wordtwist, reason being why my name has always been plugged as one of the most ACTIVE and PLAYER whO made so much number of GAMES.
Am only sharing my delight in this regard.
Have a nice day folks!

I am amazed at all the words I have never heard of! I am hoping that with practice I will improve. My goal is always to make at least average. My heart jumps when that happens.

I type at about 60wpm max in regular typing. When playing Wordtwist it can get up to 75wpm. I have found 145 words on a 4x4 board here before, and have scored 705 points in a 4x4 game just today. Although a fast typing speed can make a huge difference, having a slower speed need not stop you from scoring highly. Word and pattern knowledge will always be the most important thing.

Ding-ding-ding.
As far as I know, I'm one of the fastest Boggle-playing typists around (tooting my own horn) but midnight has probably beat me head-to-head 98% of the time we play because of his word knowledge. It doesn't mean anything to be able to type fast if you can't spot the words ;)
I have some videos up on YouTube, but I ought to make new ones; I don't typo nearly as much as I used to. I'll put something new up there soon and link it back - pretty much just to show off (though, does anyone read this anymore?)
EDIT: 145 words per minute normally; no idea what I hit during Boggle if I find a good anagram set :D

I type between 70-75 wpm. On a superbly loaded board, with a little bit of concentration, there should be no problem in reaching 1400+... although I have yet to do that. I would not be surprised that a few here has the talent and skill to reach well beyond the 1500+ mark.
